Tina was waiting for me at the kitchen table the next morning. Her arm was free of the bandage, and there was a large tattoo, a complicated composition featuring a heart inside a birdcage, surrounded by pink and blue flowers. It was beautiful.

“Listen,” she said when I came in.

She was wearing a tight T-shirt and skintight ragged jeans. Her silver anklet sparkled against the black of her patent leather high-heels. I sat in front of her, and crossed my arms.

“Listen…” she said again.

The door to my mother’s room opened and she came out, yawning. She was wearing high-heeled slippers and a pair of white lace panties. She stretched as she entered the kitchen. There was a butterfly tattooed by her navel, and both her nipples were pierced. Her breasts had grown and perked up, and her abs and legs were much better defined. She shook her head. Her long hair had been bleached almost white, and they faded to blue at the roots, and had been permed, giving her an ice-princess sort of hairdo.

She leaned closer to Tina and aggressively grabbed her left breast. She bent over the sitting girl, and Tina threw her head back. My mother pushed her tongue in Tina’s mouth and gave her a long wet kiss, squeezing her breast and humming softly. Tina grabbed a handful of her white hair and pulled gently.

Then my mother let her go with a sigh, and lit up a cigarette.

“Don’t look at me that way, you prig!” she told me, blowing out a big cloud of smoke. “We can’t all be tight-assed frigid sexless bitches like you!”

She took another long pull, her cheeks hollowing, and bent down to trade a long smoky kiss with Tina. Then she turned on her heels. “By your leave,” she announced, “I need to take a long luxuriant pee.”

We watched her go, hips swaying. There was a complicate tattoo at the base of her spine, and another, like a round stamp, at the base of her neck.

“She’s right, you know,” Tina said. “You shouldn’t be so judgmental.”

She inhaled the last of her cigarette and then squashed the butt on the table top, leaving a black burn mark.

“Look at what happened with my mother,” she said, picking up the packet and pulling out a fresh cigarette. “I don’t want you to be unhappy. Your mom’s just fantastic, and you should accept that she…”

I picked a cigarette from the package in her hand and placed it between my lips.

“Just shut the fuck up and gimme a light,” I said.

Tina was beaming as she worked her lighter and I leaned into the flame, and filled my chest with my first lungful of Turkish tobacco. My world exploded.
